FUN FACTS:

The Mosasaurus was a massive marine reptile that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 70 to 66 million years ago. It was one of the top predators in the ocean, preying on fish, sharks, seabirds, and even other marine reptiles.

It could grow up to 56 feet (17 meters) long, making it one of the largest marine reptiles ever known. Its powerful jaws were lined with sharp, conical teeth, perfect for grabbing and holding onto slippery prey.

Unlike fish, Mosasaurus had to surface regularly to breathe air. It was a member of the squamate order, which includes modern-day lizards and snakes, and had lungs like its terrestrial relatives.

Similar to modern snakes, Mosasaurus had a double-hinged jaw and a flexible skull, allowing it to swallow large prey whole. This adaptation made it a formidable hunter in the prehistoric seas.

The first Mosasaurus fossils were discovered in the Netherlands in the late 18th century, and the species was named after the nearby Meuse River (Latin: Mosa). The discovery of Mosasaurus played a key role in advancing the study of paleontology. Today, Mosasaurus is a popular dinosaur-era reptile, often featured in movies and documentaries about prehistoric life.
