FUN FACTS:
The name Carcharodontosaurus means “shark-toothed lizard,” derived from the Greek words karcharías (shark) and odous (tooth). This name was inspired by its serrated teeth, which closely resembled those of a shark, perfectly adapted for slicing through flesh.
As one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs, rivaling the size of Tyrannosaurus rex, the Carcharodontosaurus could grow up to 40 feet (12 meters) in length and weigh as much as 7 to 8 tons, making it a fearsome predator of the Late Cretaceous period.
Carcharodontosaurus had enormous jaws filled with teeth that could grow up to 8 inches (20 cm) long. These teeth were designed not just for biting, but for tearing chunks of flesh from its prey, which likely included large sauropods and other dinosaurs.
Fossils of Carcharodontosaurus have been primarily found in North Africa, particularly in countries like Morocco and Egypt. This region, known as the Sahara during the Cretaceous period, was a lush environment teeming with large dinosaurs, making it a prime hunting ground for this apex predator.
The original Carcharodontosaurus fossils were discovered in the early 20th century, but they were destroyed during World War II when the museum housing them in Germany was bombed. The species was re-discovered in the 1990s with new fossils found in Morocco, allowing scientists to study this incredible dinosaur once again.
